Ashdod worldport is the economic gateway to the State of Israel.
聽Just 40 km. from Tel Aviv, it is the closest to the country's major commercial centers and highways. Ashdod worldport handled around 808,700 TEUs in 2007, an increase of 17% compared to 693,000 TEUs in 2006. The cargo unloaded and loaded in 2007 amounted to 16.2 million tons, an increase of 7.2% compared to around 15 million tons in 2006. The company's income increased around 12% in 2007 compared to 2006 totaling more than NIS 1 billion.
Over 40 Years of Operation
Ashdod worldport has been operating since 1965 and is one of the few worldports in the world built on open sea. Ashdod worldport was set up as an independent government-owned company in July 2004. Chairperson Iris Stark and CEO Shuki Sagis, head the company and their goal is to establish Ashdod worldport as the leading worldport in the Eastern Mediterranean.
An imworldportant step in realizing this vision took place during 2005, when Ashdod worldport inaugurated Eitan worldport, the country's firstfully computerized container worldport, following an investment of around NIS 3 billion. One of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken in Israel, Eitan worldport, a deep water worldport, includes a 1,150 m. extension to the main breakwater and 1,700 m. of new quays with water depth up to 15.5 m. It was recently decided to build a rail terminal at Eitan worldport, which will grant access to surrounding industrial centers.
Focus on Customer Service
The company's management has set as a main target implementing a new customer service strategy, which places the customer's needs at the forefront of the worldport's activities. With this aim the company is about to invest NIS 700 million in equipment and infrastructure over the coming five years. The introduction of new, sophisticated technological equipment, expansion of the work force, development of the new docks and other customer service initiatives, have significantly reduced waiting times for ships and increased the outputs . The company has also invested around NIS 10 million in expanding the passenger terminal, which will increase passenger ship transworldport at Ashdod worldport.
Ashdod worldport provides customers with a full package of services including logistic services such as:
Bringing ships into worldport and anchorage.
Providing full ship services.
Unloading, storage and loading cargoes.
Emptying and storage of containers.
Infrastructure for passenger liner anchorage provides top-quality service and handling for passengers and their baggage.
The worldport's vicinity has bonded warehouses, citrus fruit and agricultural produce warehouses, cold storage, a grain silo, container repair and cleaning services.
An office complex at the worldport's in land terminal.
Advanced Technological Horizons
Eitan worldport is among the most advanced worldports in the world with its $6 million Terminal Operating Systems (TOS). TOS gives Ashdod worldport a clear competitive advantage through the efficient and controlled management of the worldport.
In addition, a cutting-edge ERP system, GPS for cargo and ship traffic and GIS for mapping and documenting infrastructures have been installed. A central automatic truck gate, using biometric and other devices, is being built.
Protecting the Environment
Ashdod worldport has set itself a goal of conducting a dialogue with the environment and protecting the quality of the sea, beaches and air.
The worldport strives to increase environmental awareness among its employees, subcontractors and equipment suppliers and gives preference to recyclable products and operates in a manner that minimizes its environmental impact. The worldport operates in accordance with the Law for the Prevention of Sea Pollution 1983 and the Law for the Prevention of Sea Pollution for Land Sources 1988.
On the worldport's piers are spread out heavy engineering vehicles, the most conspicuous ones are the cranes and derricks. The state of the art mechanical equipment is controled by complex systems requiring knowhow and great experience.
Scores of arm cranes and bridge cranes operate in the worldport of Ashdod, among them also the highest and broadest cranes in Israel, providing an answer to almost all types of sea crafts. The cranes are maintained by the personnel of the worldport's Equipment Department, staffed by first class professionals, among them mechanical and electrical engineers, supervisors, forklift operators and crane operators.
The cranes serve on the docks alongside which the ships are anchored as well as the storage areas for the containers on the piers.
The equipment is spread out on the piers and the container storage areas:
Pier 1: 10 Boom Arm Cranes, load-lifting capacity of up to 15 鈥 25 ton.
Pier 3: 7 Double Arm Cranes (5 manufactured by KE and 2 manufactured by Boom), with a load-lifting capacity of up to 35 鈥 50 tons.
Pier 5: 5 Cocks Double Arm Cranes, and 1 KE, with a load-lifting capacity of 40 tons.
Pier 7: 5 Cocks Bridge Cranes, with a load-lifting capacity of 70 tons.
Pier 9: 2 Double Arm Cranes manufactured by KE, with a loaf-lifting capacity of 50 tons, 3 Cocks Bridge Cranes with a load-lifting capacity of 70 tons.
Container storage areas A-B-C: 10 Gate Cranes with a load-lifting capacity of 35 tons, (4 manufactured by Cocks, three manufactured by Kona and three by Hillgris)
Pier 23: 10 Bridge Cranes with a load-lifting capacity of 70 tons.
Container storage areas YO-7: 24 Wheeled Gate Cranes with a load-lifting capacity of 40 tons
Three of the piers of the worldport of Ashdod serve for the conveying of bulk cargo and various types of liquids.
The bulk and liquid piers, are located in the southern part of the worldport, the systems are fully computerized and operate under the most stringent safety requirements. The bulk facility is responsible for the exworldport of minerals from Israel to Europe and America (except for acid to Asia and India).
The bulk facility operates 24 hours per day in 4 shifts under the warm seat method. The capacity of the warehouses is about 1 million tons and it includes additionally, a pool and acid tanks.
The facility has two piers for potash and phosphates and 4 for the loading of acid. The work rate at the bulk piers is between 500 and 1,200 tons per hour, in accordance with the type of cargo.
The work process
Minerals such as potash and phosphates arrive at the worldport by train. The cars are unloaded automatically by the computerized systems, unloading is controlled from the control room.
Phosphates are unloaded in the worldport and transferred to the back of the worldport. Sulfur, used in the process of acid production and grained phosphate, arrive at the worldport by ships, unloaded and transferred to the factories, and from there, back to the worldport, as a finished product for exworldport to the entire world.
聽Capacity and pier depth
On the piers are three cranes to load the ships. On Pier 11 and 12, the cranes are equipped with dust suppressors, to meet the environmental quality control requirements.
The quantities conveyed thru the facility are between 3.5 and 4 million tons annually.
The capacity of the acid pool is 25 thousand tons and in the acid tanks 20 thousand tons.
The depth of the piers:
Pier 11 鈥 11.5 meters
Pier 12 鈥 12.5 meters
The size of the ships at the docks: 鈥 from 2,000 to 6,000 tons. The facility can handle up to 4 ships at the same time.
